The Challenges

Automotives are composed of various segments such as exterior, interior and lighting etc., and the classification of automotive applications is far more complex and varied than those for general industrial purposes. Automotive parts require a wide range of material properties such as high impact, high flowability and high modulus that meet the requirements for each part.

‘A’, one of global top bus manufacturers, was looking for a new material with excellent impact strength suitable for bus air conditioner and carrier housing to be used in some of its bus models. In addition, the bus models in question needed not only room temperature impact strength but also low-temperature impact strength because they were being exported to regions where the winter period is longer than elsewhere. Another problem was the frequent defects that occurred during the injection molding process as a result of the deterioration of housing mold.

The Solutions

LOTTE Chemical proposed starex® High Impact ABS SD-0190H as a solution that is best-suited to the ‘A’ company’s bus air conditioner housing and carrier. SD-0190H shows excellent both general impact and low-temperature impact strength features. Its injection molding stability is also superior. ‘A’ company’s outdated mold made it difficult to set up a balanced ‘Rib’ structure that can possibly spread out and mitigate stress of injection molding. We suggested a material solution based on high impact strength, which can effectively minimize cracks that usually occur at the corners of injection products. With the new solution, ‘A’ company was able to secure high impact feature without altering its mold; moreover, the new solution’s higher flowability resulted in the significant increase in the productivity of injection molding per hour.
